API Plan 65A

API Plan 65A – Leakage Detection and Drain System for Single Seals

API Plan 65A is a leakage detection and drain system designed for single mechanical seals.

It allows uncontrolled leakage to drain from the seal chamber while monitoring leakage rates to detect excessive wear or seal failure. This plan is commonly used when leakage cannot be completely eliminated but needs to be monitored and safely drained.

Features

How It Works:

  1. Leakage from the mechanical seal flows into a drain line.
  2. The drain leads to a collection reservoir or drain pot.
  3. A level switch or flow indicator monitors leakage levels.
  4. If leakage exceeds a preset threshold, an alarm or alert is triggered.
  5. The leaked fluid is drained or disposed of properly.

Benefits

  • Early leak detection – Provides a warning before complete seal failure occurs.
  • Protects the environment – Prevents leaked fluid from contaminating surrounding equipment.
  • Simple design – Requires minimal instrumentation compared to pressurized plans.
  • Improves maintenance planning – Helps schedule seal replacement before excessive leakage leads to equipment failure.

Drawbacks

  • Leakage is not controlled – Does not prevent leakage, only monitors and drains it.
  • Not suitable for hazardous fluids – Leaking hazardous or toxic fluids could pose environmental or safety risks.
  • Requires regular maintenance – Drain lines and sensors need periodic inspection to ensure functionality.
  • Not effective for gaseous process fluids – Primarily used for liquid leakage monitoring.

Applications

  1. Oil & Gas Industry – Used in crude oil and hydrocarbon pumps where small seal leakage is expected.
  2. Chemical Processing – Helps monitor leakage in pumps handling corrosive or non-volatile chemicals.
  3. Power Plants – Applied in pumps handling cooling water, lubrication oil, or boiler feedwater.
  4. Refineries – Monitors seal leakage in light hydrocarbon service pumps.
  5. Water & Wastewater Treatment – Ensures proper leakage management in clean water or wastewater pumps.
  6. Food & Beverage Industry – Used in non-critical hygienic applications where leakage must be monitored but does not pose contamination risks.

API Plan 65A is useful in applications where leakage monitoring is necessary for maintenance planning and environmental safety, but complete leak containment is not required.
