Unlike API Plan 02, which has no modifications to the seal chamber, Plan 03 improves heat dissipation and reduces turbulence by increasing the internal volume of the chamber. - No active circulation – If the process fluid does not naturally move well within the chamber, hot spots may develop.
- Limited to low-to-moderate pressure applications – Not ideal for extreme operating conditions where external cooling or flushing is needed.

API Plan 03 is an improvement over Plan 02, offering better heat dissipation and reduced turbulence due to the enlarged bore. However, it is still a passive system without active cooling or circulation, making it unsuitable for high-temperature or dirty fluid applications.
